So currently I am reading a book by Richard Dawkins called The God Delusion. Obviously I am mainly reading this to make myself look super intelligent and interesting whilst on the bus/tube, but I do find it fairly interesting as well I promise.

The reason I bring this all up is that I find space, the universe, planets, etc… fascinating and included in this book is a very interesting theory on the big bang and multiverses by theoretical physicist, Lee Smolin, that I just had to share.

Smolin adds in a Darwinian aspect to the multiverse theory. Smolin’s idea states that daughter universes are born of parent universes via black holes, like the ones at the centers of Galaxies and floating around in space gobbling up everything in their path.

Fun fact: Spaghettification is the vertical stretching and horizontal compression of objects into long thin shapes, such as an astronaut who, passing within a black hole’s event horizon, is “stretched like spaghetti” by the gravitational gradient from head to toe.

Anyway, Smolin continues to state that these daughter universes are slightly mutated versions of the constants of its parent. Heredity is the essential ingredient in Darwinian natural selection and Smolin’s theory follows suit in the sense that positive mutations that are passed on and gives these daughter universes what it takes to ‘survive’ and also ‘reproduce’ via black holes of their own will prevail in the multiverse.

‘What it takes’ includes the daughter universe lasting long enough before it, for example, collapses in on itself to ‘reproduce’ and because the act of reproduction takes place in black holes, successful universes must be able to create them.

This ability requires various other properties such as matter condensing into clouds and then stars which is prerequisite to making black holes. Stars, are also essential for the development of certain chemistry, such as that of life.

We are know as ‘Life Forms’ I hear you cry, and you are right, and extremely clever to have worked out where this is going. Well done, High Five!!

So we as life forms could be the result of reproduction within a black hole from another universe which is just one of who knows how many, usually with space it is mind boggling numbers, and our own universe is also potentially creating X amount of new universes and is now a proud parent.
